Summary/Objective
Maintain native plant landscaping including gardens, naturalized areas, and trails. Assist with seed propagation, native plant programming as needed, and invasive species management. Work with staff, volunteers and contract gardeners to accomplish landscape objectives.
Essential Job Duties
- Maintain grounds in accordance with landscape plan including shrubs, native planting beds, weeding, and mulching, etc.
- Work with contract gardeners, MDC volunteers and staff and those from partner organizations to accomplish tasks.
- Operate and maintain hand and power equipment for landscaping.
- Control nuisance animals and exotic and invasive plant species.
- Establish new plantings as needed to include structured beds and naturalized areas that may include native forbs, grasses and trees.
- Construct and maintain benches, stepping stones, and other structures as appropriate for garden spaces.
- Answer questions from the public in a friendly and professional manner.

Education and Experience
- Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.
- At least one (1) year of related experience or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to operate tools and equipment for land management.
- Ability to define a problem, analyze relevant information, and develop solutions and plans to solve the problem.
- Ability to interact with the general public in a professional manner.
- Ability to develop cooperative working relationships.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work varying shifts and hours, as needed.
- Ability to correctly identify plant species, or use resources to identify unknown species.
- Ability to operate basic hand tools for landscape Maintenance.
Work Environment
- Frequently work in outdoor weather which may be hot, cold, wet or humid.
- Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.
- May be subject to exposure to mechanical oils, fumes or airborne particles and work near moving mechanical parts.
Physical Abilities
- Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
- Frequently operate tools and heavy equipment safely.
- Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
- Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more, and three-dimensional vision
- Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
- Concentrated attention is required at all times.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Exemption Status/Special Notes
This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
