Summary/Objective

Works as an assistant to the GIS Specialists in the Science Branch.

Essential Job Duties

  • Participate on GIS project teams and provide technical assistance to staff and assist GIS Specialists as needed.
  • Adhere to standard data management practices by acquiring, organizing, and maintaining project related data.
  • Develop graphical products to be used in presentations, publications, meetings and department websites that reflect MDC’s mission.
  •  Perform basic database analysis and maintenance involving daily GIS applications.

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Provide general support for GIS services, including troubleshooting for non-GIS users.
  • Assist with MDC GIS training efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Geography, CAD Technology, or related field.
  • One (1) year of related professional experience.
  • Must maintain a current, valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of GIS software and strong familiarity with relational database design as it applies to GIS software.
  • Knowledge of general mapping principles, spatial analysis, remote sensing and cartography.
  • Working knowledge of installing, configuring and maintaining GIS systems and spatial data modeling.
  • Ability to gather, analyze and integrate spatial data needs from staff and perform research on the information.
  • Ability to convey technical information and concepts to non-technical staff and stakeholders.
  • Ability to define a problem, analyze relevant information, and develop solutions and plans to solve the problem.
  • Ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to provide quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to travel and stay overnight.
  • Ability to be self-motivated, exercise independent judgement and take action on it.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks while under pressure.

Work Environment

  • Work is typically performed in a standard office environment.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain in a stationary position 70% or more of the time.
  • Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
