Summary/Objective

This position will assist with aspects of Missouri's Deer Managment Assistance Program (DMAP). Job duties will primarily be related to communication with landowners, data entry, creating property maps, and assisting with trainings as needed. Essential Job Duties

  • Correspond with landowners via email and telephone. 
  • Maintain the accuracy and availability to information in various databases.
  • Enter DMAP application information and deer population data. 
  • Create and edit maps using ArcGIS Pro. 
  • Upload trail camera data. 
  • Provide scientific technical support to researchers, students, managers, administrators, educators, and protection staff.
  • Duties will include work in the field (20%) and office (80%). 
  • Occasionally required to work weekends, irregular hours, and over-night travel.  

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Assisting with deer disease sampling efforts. 
  • Assisting with field work associated with deer/elk research projects. 
  • Entering, organizing, and summarizing data associated with ongoing research projects. 
  • Assisting other Science Branch programs as needed. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Sciences or related biological sciences degree is required
  • Experience summarizing and analyzing datasets and communicating findings, highly desired.
  • Experience with ArcGIS software, including ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro.
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver’s license.
  • Good Driving Record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work irregular hours and weekends with the possibility of extended travel time during seasonal sampling periods.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with Department personnel government partners and the general public.
  • Comfortable working with and collecting tissue samples from animal carcasses.
  • Ability to operate ATV, UTV, and trailer backing skills desired.
  • Ability to operate and deploy trail cameras.
  • Regularly work in office environment with additional staff performing their job duties.

Work Environment

  • Regularly work in outdoor environments where hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions exist.
  • Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.
  • Beig exposed or encountering biting insects.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain stationary up to 70% of the time.
  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Regularly operate tools and other machinery and relocate machinery to other areas.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Regularly lift up to 30 pounds, correctly lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
