Summary/Objective

Carry out wildlife management activities on conservation areas to provide managed lands for public use.

Otter Slough CA is an intensively managed wetland primarily managed for waterfowl and wetland species.

Essential Job Duties

  • Perform assigned duties associated with habitat and other wildlife management, including prescribed burns, eradication efforts, maintenance and cleaning.
  • Oversees and implements the manipulation of cropland, grassland, old field, forest, woodland, glade, savanna, and wetland.
  • Participate in invasive plant control, herbicide application, manipulating water levels, and chainsaw work.
  • Operate equipment necessary to conduct area management, and maintenance including UTVs, ATVs tractors, skid steers, and farm implements such as, disks, mowers, planters, drills, cultivators, sprayers, and fertilizer spreaders.
  • Maintain area public use facilities, trails, field roads, and area and boundary signing.
  • Oversee maintenance on assigned work areas, roads, public areas and equipment.
  • Monitors public use and wildlife use on the area, and assists the public, especially during the hunting seasons, managed hunts, and special events.
  • Supervise employees in the performance of the above activities.

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Conducts wildlife surveys, other monitoring and evaluations projects, and documents habitat management acres and accomplishments. 
  • Works closely with other district, region, and Division personnel to implement priority conservation work within assigned districts.
  • Maintain a daily log of work activities, and prepares monthly narratives, timesheets, expense accounts, purchasing logs.
  • Conduct prescribed burns under the supervision of qualified burn boss.
  • Conduct wildfire detection, pre-suppression, and suppression duties.
  • Monitor general supply, timber and fire suppression inventory, maintenance and administration. 
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least three (3) years of experience as a Forestry/Wildlife Worker.
  • Experience with prescribed burns, certification helpful.
  • Ability to attain Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License within 6 months of initial employment.
  • Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months of employment.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate tools and equipment for land management.
  • Ability to use office equipment, such as computer, calculator, camera, scanner and printer.
  • Basic plant identification and wildlife habitat knowledge.

Work Environment

  • Frequently work in outdoor weather.
  • Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.

Physical Abilities

  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more, and three-dimensional vision
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
