Summary/Objective
Provide a safe and enjoyable environment to educate the public on hunting, shooting, and outdoor activities.
Essential Job Duties
- Ensure safety of public users and staff at all times while using and operating ranges, classrooms and associated facilities.
- Approve permit applications.
- Accept fees, monitor scheduling, make command calls and inspect range.
- Conduct range maintenance and cleaning.
- Instruct and/or assist with Training Center Programs which include Hunter Education, Bow Hunter Education, Outdoor skills, youth clinics, hunts and other activities.
- Answer questions via telephone, email and in-person discussions with internal and external stakeholders and customers.
- Order supplies and track and control expenditures to include those utilizing a state credit card, ensures proper documentation and filing of necessary documentation and forms.
Ancillary Job Duties
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of range experience or building and grounds maintenance; and one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- Must maintain a current, valid driver’s license.
- Classroom training/education experience, preferred.
- Preferred certification in one or more of the following: Hunter Education or similar, CPR, First Aid, Archery or similar, NRA Range Safety Officer.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to operate all types of vehicles (including standard shift), chain saws, mowers and various types of farm equipment.
- Ability to operate various types of powered hand tools (drill press, welder, table saw, etc.).
- Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with Department staff and work with a minimum amount of supervision.
- Ability to work effectively with the public.
- Ability to work varying shifts and hours.
Work Environment
- Regularly work in outdoor conditions, where climates may be hot, cold, wet and/or humid.
- Regularly exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.
Physical Abilities
- Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
- Regularly operate vehicles, power tools and land management equipment.
- Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
- Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
- Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more.
- Three-dimensional vision- ability to judge distance and space relationships.
- Regularly lift up to 50 pounds, correctly lift up to 75 pounds.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Exemption Status/Special Notes
This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
Salaried and hourly employees are expected to use a mobile device-cellular phone for Department business, as needed.
