Summary/Objective
Support fisheries management programs within the Regional Resource Management Branch in the Northeast Region.
Essential Job Duties
- Follow assigned processes to remain compliant with policies and procedures.
- Use, maintain, and modify regional equipment, including motor vehicles, boats, outboard motors, trailers, generators, chainsaws, water pumps, herbicide sprayers, ATVs, UTVs, and specialized fish and other aquatic organism sampling equipment.
- Design and fabricate specialized equipment, displays, storage components, and fish-holding compartments using a variety of power and hand tools.
- Manage equipment procurement and inventory while maintaining shop and storage.
- Assist fisheries biologists with surveys of fish and other aquatic organisms in large reservoirs, lakes, big rivers, streams, and ponds using electrofishing, nets, seines, and other sampling gear.
- Prepare fish structures (e.g. scales, spines, otoliths) for age and growth analysis.
- Assist with lake and stream habitat improvement projects.
- Inspect bridges, crossings, impoundments, and waterways for aquatic invasive species and coordinate herbicide applications.
- Record, compile, analyze, and maintain records of various data and activities, including fish and other aquatic organism sampling, surveys, chemical treatments, fish health, investigations, etc. Data is summarized and analyzed using a variety of software packages (e.g. FINS, ArcView GIS, Word, Access, Excel).
- Maintain signage and information boards at conservation areas and stream accesses while assisting with conservation area maintenance.
- Conduct presentations to school and/or public groups.
- Perform administrative duties, such as rentals, bid management, activity reporting, invoice, and purchasing card processing while assisting with annual budget planning and work plans.
- Attend department-wide training and cross-training classes, technical training, professional workshops, and conferences.
- Supervise and train employees and/or volunteers.
- Assist with chronic wasting disease (CWD) management activities.
Ancillary Job Duties
- Assist with forestry and wildlife work teams, as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High School and three (3) to five (5) years applicable work experience is required or an Associates Degree in Natural Resources, Fisheries or Biological Sciences and two (2) years of applicable work experience is required.
- Ability to pass an approved boating safety course and obtain a Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card within 6 months of employment.
- Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.
- Ability to secure a Pesticide Applicator's License within one year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to operate and maintain boats, outboard motors, land maintenance equipment, power tools, and large trucks pulling trailers.
- Ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships.
- Basic carpentry, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing skills.
- Ability to identify a problem, analyze relevant information, and develop solutions and plans to solve the problem independently and/or cooperatively.
- Ability to use office equipment, such as computer, calculator, camera, scanner and printer.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and perform data entry.
- Experience with fishery science and wildlife management.
- Attention to detail.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to travel and work varying shifts, as required.
Work Environment
- Regularly work in outdoor temperatures, including wet, hot, and/or cold environments.
- Work routine late night shifts during fish sampling season.
- Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.
Physical Abilities
- Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
- Regularly operate tools and other machinery and relocate machinery to other areas.
- Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
- Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
- Regularly lift up to 50 pounds, correctly lift up to 100 pounds.
- Concentrated attention is required at all times.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
