Summary/Objective

Provide management and administrative support to the Natural History Biologist and relevant Regional Resource Management Staff.  This is a 3-year term training position; selected candidate will be expected to be promoted or relocated at the discretion of the Resource Management Branch to meet goals and needs of the branch.

 

Essential Job Duties

  • Perform management on habitats for grassland, woodland, wetlands and forests, etc.
  • Attend professional development training to learn natural resource and species management.
  • Perform prescribed fires, exotic species control, woody vegetation removal, and prairie reconstructions.
  • Conduct faunal and floral inventories and surveys for species of conservation concern.
  • Compile routine reports, prepare work plans, track accomplishments, etc.
  • Assist with district budget and monitor expenditures, including bidding for goods and services and contract development.
  • Maintain MDC owned or rented equipment.
  • Prepare and present programs to the general public through a variety of media.
  • Inspect and maintain boundary, sign, gate, facility, and shop.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Wildlife Management, Biological Science, Zoology, or related field.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.

  • Ability to operate vehicles, ATVs, and power tools
  • Ability to operate wildlife traps.
  • Ability to read and write land descriptions using latitudes and longitudes, GPS data, and standard legal descriptions (Township, Range, Section), and to locate specific points, areas and features on topographic maps and on the ground.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel occasionally throughout the state during the workweek with periodic overnight stays.
  • Ability to work varying hours and shifts independently or in teams.

Work Environment

  • Significant portion of work is performed in varying field environments.
  • Regularly perform outdoors where hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions exist and ticks, chiggers, leeches, gnats, mosquitoes, and briars are present.
  • Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.

Physical Abilities

  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Ability to walk in rough and steep terrain.
  • Occasionally operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision and three-dimensional vision.
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
