Summary/Objective

Monitor, protect, and restore high quality natural communities and species of conservation concern.

Essential Job Duties

  • Coordinating implementation of the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Bat Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) in coordination with the HCP Implementation Team. 
  • Analyze and summarize spatial and tabular data for inclusion in the annual report and for monitoring HCP-related activities
  • Track progress on all HCP implementation requirements
  • Maintain the HCP web page on the MDC research website
  • Coordinate development of management plans for Priority Bat Management Zones (PBMZs) with the HCP Team and District Supervisors
  • Manage the cave monitoring plans by creating a rotational schedule for surveying the condition of cave entrances and surrounding habitat, coordinating with the Bat Ecologist and regional staff to ensure all surveys planned for a given year are completed, and managing incoming data including any actions recommended to improve conditions.
  • Develop training materials
  • Assist in developing and delivering HCP-related training programs to MDC staff, partners, and the public
  • Assist with reviewing and updating HCP buffer and PBMZ maps in ArcMap
  • Coordinate development of an HCP Communication Plan and associated public outreach
  • Coordinate development of bat-friendly construction and demolition guidelines, and guidelines for bat-friendly construction of roads, trails, and fire lines
  • Coordinate update of White-nose Syndrome action plan
  • Using information provided by MDC staff to compile and update annual grant reports
  • Developing a tool to facilitate assessment of species knowledge gaps and tracking progress towards filling knowledge gaps
  • Developing a system for tracking progress on Species Status Assessments involving Missouri species

Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Wildlife Science, Ecology Biological Sciences, Zoology, or related.
  • At least two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in public land resource management or natural area management.
  • Experience in Urban Wildlife Management, preferred.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to use office equipment, such as copier, phone, fax, scanner, and computer.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to use provided computer technology to enhance the quality of work and programs.
  • Ability to keep focused on understanding, anticipating and responding to the needs of customers (whether Department employees or the general public).
  • Ability to identify internal and external politics that impact the work of the Department.
  • Ability to define a problem, analyze relevant information, and develop solutions and plans to solve the problem.
  • Ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships.
  • Ability to work varying hours and shifts.
  • Working knowledge of GIS and GPS technologies.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Knowledge of Missouri’s habitats and wildlife, ecology and natural systems.

Work Environment

  • Occasional travel and overnight stays.

Physical Abilities

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.

This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
