Summary/Objective

This position primarily provides high-quality, dynamic print design and layout services for the monthly Missouri Conservationist magazine, as well as a variety of print publications and marketing products. Our ideal candidate is a quick study and creative multi-tasker with strong editorial design experience, typography, and print production skills. You have an eye for the details. You are comfortable and confident accepting and giving feedback with a team. You consistently meet deadlines with inspiring ideas and a great attitude. 

Essential Job Duties

  • Design magazine department pages, feature articles, and special editions.
  • Assist in photo research and coordination and art direction of articles and photo shoots.
  • Select appropriate photos, art, fonts, etc. for publications.
  • Supply caption writing.
  • Follow and maintain branding standards and style guides.
  • Provide creative direction and guidance to other designers, editors, and photographers.
  • Create original illustrations, graphics, and maps.
  • Assist with photo color corrections.
  • Complete final proofing and distribution preparation.
  • Create accessible/508-compliant digital publications.
  • Manage digital archives.
  • Assist with ad design and print marketing.
  • Perform quality control activities on third party contracts.

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Serve on internal and external committees.
  • Write and submit contract bid printing specifications for publication print production.
  • Award bids for printing, coordinate the printing process, and ensure quality control through delivery of the final product at MDC Distribution Center.
  • Ensure contract compliance and timely invoice payment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Journalism, Communications, Conservation, or related.
  • At least two (2) years of editorial experience in four- to six-color design with computers.
  • Must maintain a current, valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to use office equipment, such as copier, multi-line phone system, scanner, and computer.
  • Proficiency in Adobe CC Software application, especially InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Ability to create accessible/508-compliant publications preferred.
  • Process superior visual and graphic aesthetic.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Be an active collaborator with writers, editor, designers and others on creative solutions.
  • Ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and organize workload to meet strict deadlines.
  • Professional writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel and stay overnight, as needed.
  • Ability to work varying shifts and hours, as needed.
