Summary/Objective

Keep vehicles and equipment in safe and operating condition.

Essential Job Duties

  • Schedule equipment repairs and follow up on completion.
  • Identify, diagnose, and troubleshoot vehicle and equipment issues.
  • Repair and maintain vehicles, tractors, construction equipment, ATVs, generators, outboards, boats, etc.
  • Conduct safety inspections.
  • Perform welding and fabrication projects.
  • Order supplies and complete paperwork.

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a mechanic.
  • Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
  • Forklift Certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain Missouri State Motor Vehicle Inspection Certification within 6 months of employment. Department will pay for the Certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Class A CDL within 6 months of employment. Department may pay as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently on a job site with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to perform all types of welding and fabricate specialized equipment.
  • Knowledge to perform a major overhaul of diesel or gasoline engines, transmissions and other mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and act quickly and decisively on the determined course of action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other Department employees and the general public.
  • Ability to work varying hours and shifts.
  • Ability to travel and stay overnight occasionally.

Work Environment

  • Occasionally perform outdoors where hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions exist.
  • May be subject to exposure to mechanical oils, fumes or airborne particles and work near moving mechanical parts.
  • Frequently exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.

Physical Abilities

  • Frequently operate tools and heavy equipment safely.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less, three-dimensional vision, and precise hand-eye coordination.
  • Regularly lift up to 50 pounds, correctly lift up to 100 pounds or more.
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
