Summary/Objective

Lead development and coordination of design, planning, installation, and production of non-personal interpretive exhibits.

Essential Job Duties

  • Create project schedules and track project development for each phase of exhibit development process.  
  • Ensure exhibit projects are on time and within budget. 
  • Conduct progress meetings to ensure projects are on schedule and provide quality assurance. 
  • Manage external contracts relating to designing and developing small exhibit components to large-scale interpretive exhibits and interactive components.  
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders from across all Branches within the Department to produce quality exhibits.  
  • Prepare and send Request for Bid/Quote documents, manage the bid process, evaluate vendors, award contracts, oversee contract compliance. 
  • Schedule, evaluate, manage and supervise the exhibit shop team (exhibit designer, lead exhibit shop carpenter). The exhibit team includes 2-5 hourly employees.  
  • Oversee the development of two-dimensional and three-dimensional exhibit designs and layouts for nature centers, regional offices, portable exhibits, and permanent wayside/wayfinding exhibit panels.
  • Develop annual budget request and track spending.  
  • Missouri State Fair coordination including staffing, programming, and exhibits and other regional fairs and events, oversee the facility maintenance and preparation of MSF grounds, serve as lead coordinator of MSF Planning Committee, provide direction, deadlines, and priorities for implementing MDC programming at MSF.  
  • Manage exhibit development, design and repairs for eleven interpretive centers (Nature/Education Centers, and Regional offices) throughout Missouri. 
  • Oversees the development, management, and updates of over 100 exhibits available to Department staff for loan. 

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Serve on internal and external regular and special committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Museum Studies, Exhibit Design, Non-Personal Interpretation, Education, Biology, Forestry or related field.
  • At least 3 years relevant experience in exhibit development, non-personal interpretation, nature center direction or related work, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must maintain a current, valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to evaluate and analyze Branch programs and develop recommendations for improvement.
  • Ability to coordinate administrative and management activities to achieve Branch and Department goals.
  • Ability to give overall guidance and direction to staff and assure their programs are properly carried out in achieving an efficient and productive operation.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop preferred.
  • Ability to research topics and develop Interpretive writing scripts for exhibits.
  • Knowledge of exhibit design, construction, fabrication, installation, ADA standards, and safety, etc.
  • Working knowledge of biophilic immersive interactive interpretative exhibit design.

Work Environment

  • Work may be performed outdoors where hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions are present.
  • Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain in a stationary position up to 70% of the time.
  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision and three-dimensional vision.
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
