Summary/Objective

Work with the Missouri Department of Conservation's Exhibit Staff to assist with deliveries of exhibits, repair and build exhibits, prepare the State Fair Conservation Buildings and grounds and maintain the facility during the Fair. Duties include but are not limited to, exhibit deliveries, mowing, gardening, and building maintenance. These positions are from mid-May through mid-September depending on needs after the fair. We can work with your school schedule if you are a college student.

The position is an excellent job for meeting a variety of conservation professionals and being a part of a work team involving diverse skills. Due to the position's responsibilities, a dependable worker who can follow through with tasks and meet deadlines as required. The job requires repeated lifting (up to 100 lbs) and work in extreme outdoor temperatures. Possible overnight travel throughout the state (travel expenses reimbursed by MDC) occurs during exhibit deliveries and the fairs. Must have or obtain a valid Driver's License and pass a drug test.

Essential Job Duties

  • Maintain grounds through mowing, application of fertilizer and pesticides, and maintaining turf, trees, shrubs, native planting beds, weeding, and mulching, etc.
  • Operate and repair equipment for landscaping, painting, pressure washing, etc.
  • Construct and maintain water features, retaining walls, walkways, planting beds, native plant gardens, courtyards, and fences.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers and stakeholders regarding facilities.

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.
  • At least one (1) year of related experience, including carpentry, landscaping, or grounds maintenance.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D./HiSET equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate tools and equipment for land management.
  • Knowledge of basic wiring, plumbing, carpentry, and landscape maintenance and repairs.
  • Working knowledge of facility maintenance equipment and the use of cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to define a problem, analyze relevant information, and develop solutions and plans to solve the problem.
  • Ability to interact with the general public in a professional manner.
  • Ability to develop cooperative working relationships.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work varying shifts and hours, as needed.

Work Environment

  • Frequently work in outdoor weather which may be hot, cold, wet or humid.
  • Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.
  • May be subject to exposure to mechanical oils, fumes or airborne particles and work near moving mechanical parts.

Physical Abilities

  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Frequently operate tools and heavy equipment safely.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more, and three-dimensional vision
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
