Summary/Objective

The IT Desktop Specialist serves as the system administrator and technical lead for the Agency-wide computer management system and all computer hardware configuration, as well as standards development. Perform cyber security incident follow-up, including investigation, mitigation, and security recommendations.

Essential Job Duties

  • Serve as the system administrator and technical lead for Agency-wide computer management system, including patch management, software distribution, and image creation and maintenance; serve as subject matter expert on other computer management system areas, including asset and life cycle management.  

  • Serve as technical lead for all computer hardware configuration and standards development, including assessing operating system and business requirements for long-term hardware configuration needs; serve as technical lead on selection of computer peripherals. 

  • Develop standards, policy, and strategy for all hardware and software elements. 

  • Perform endpoint cyber security incident follow-up, including investigation, resolution, and mitigation through collaboration with the IT Security Architect; make recommendations for computer endpoint security settings and configurations. 

  • Troubleshoot and resolve third-level technical issues involving computer hardware, software, networking, mobile devices, and application issues.

Education and Experience

  • Required qualifications to effectively perform the job. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in computer science, computer information systems, or closely related field required.
  • 3–5 years related work experience required; 5–8 years desired.
  • CompTIA A+ certification required.
  • CompTIA Network+ and Security+ certification desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills and abilities commonly associated with this position.
  • Understanding of computers, including use of Microsoft operating systems and products, IT services platforms (Ivanti), end-user software (Adobe, etc.), hardware technology (PCs, smartphones, networking, peripherals, etc.), and cyber security software.
  • Understanding of records management, including data collection and analysis, metadata creation, and database maintenance.
  • Understanding of human resources rules and policies.
  • Understanding of database programming, communications networking, and application development.
  • Technical skills, including equipment maintenance, selection, installation, repairs, design, and operation, as well as operation monitoring and quality control analysis.
  • Strong reading, writing, speaking, mathematical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service and time management skills.
  • Interpersonal communication and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including project management and communication.

Work Environment

  • Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
  • Every day, the position requires work in an office environment.
  • Once a month or more (but not every week), the position requires being in an enclosed vehicle or operating enclosed equipment (like a car).
  • Once a year or more (but not every month), the position requires working in remote locations or working outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions.

This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
