Summary/Objective

The Public Involvement Coordinator role will develop and facilitate public participation and engagement efforts as part of the Department's social science program. 

Essential Job Duties

  • Direct public input efforts and the collection of human dimensions data through surveys, interviews, focus groups, public and stakeholder meetings and open houses
  • Design, implement, analyze, interpret, and report research and public input efforts on topics including public participation, preferences attitudes, beliefs, expectations, and behavior, and public satisfaction with the state’s fish, forest, and wildlife management and related engagement efforts 
  • Develop and implement public input efforts associated with regulations changes and present findings to the public, internal working groups, MDC administration and the Conservation Commission 
  • Coordinate with internal and external teams to plan and implement public input efforts associated with complex conservation-related challenges and issues
  • Advise on social science and human dimensions theories and methods
  • Produce reports to synthesize findings across multiple data collection efforts

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Coordinate budgets for assigned projects. 
  • Serve on internal and regional human dimensions and conservation-related working groups
  • Serve as Science Branch lead for relevant research projects with cooperators

Education and Experience

  • Masters degree in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources, Natural Resources, Recreation, Rural Sociology, Sociology or closely related field required.
  • At least five (5) years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in natural resource management and working with natural resource/environmental laws and regulations. 
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.

  • Knowledge of social data collection and analysis.

  • Ability to identify and analyze problems, and provide solutions which take into account political, organizational and individual realities.
  • Ability to build and share a compelling view of the direction or sense of purpose of the Department; then influence/motivate others to translate a vision into action.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of consensus building, negotiation, coalition building, mediation, and other non-adversarial problem-solving approaches to resolve problems and advise management.

  • Regularly work in a standard office environment.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain stationary up to 70% of the time.
  • Regularly communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

This position has been determined to be Exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
