Summary/Objective

Serve as Department real estate professional for the acquisition of all property or land rights for purchase or trade. 

Essential Job Duties

  • Manage and negotiate the acquisition and disposal of real estate for the Department.
  • Inspects sites, secures appraisal reports, verifies legal descriptions, verifies courthouse records for ownership, taxes, and legal descriptions. 
  • Prepare a variety of real estate associated documents including affidavits, general warranty deeds, trustee’s deeds and corporation deeds.  Order title searches and reviews land title commitments and policies. 
  • Prepares land purchase, building and structural control records for Department use.  Administers and budgets for annual in lieu of tax payments to counties and levee districts. 

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Assist in the preparation of any real estate reports that may be required by management or the Commission.
  • Interface with MDC staff regarding issues that may require real estate expertise necessary to the management of MDC real estate.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Agri-Business, Real Estate or closely related field.
  • At least three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience or similar experience in real estate, right of way, or legal experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver’s license.
  • Must be able to complete the requirements for a real estate license within three months of employment.
  • Become a Notary Public.

  • Knowledge of Legal/title issues, real estate issues, finance and accounting.

  • Ability to make independent decisions and act quickly and decisively on the determined course of action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of all types of groups, Department staff and the general public.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and assist in resolving conflicts.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with Department personnel and the general public.

Work Environment

  • Regularly work in a standard office environment.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain stationary up to 70% of the time.
  • Regularly communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

This position has been determined to be Exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy. 

Salaried and hourly employees are expected to use a mobile device-cellular phone for Department business, as needed.
