Summary/Objective

Develop, coordinate and provide a wide range of training and resources to ensure safe working conditions and practices, to foster a Safety First culture.    

Essential Job Duties

  • Administer self-insurance program for workers' compensation, including managing reporting and investigating claims of on-the-job injuries or incidents.
  • Develop Regional relationships to ensure that there are adequate instructors for various safety topics such as: CPR, Wilderness First Aid, UTV, ATV, Driver Enhancement, Cargo Securement, Trailer Backing, and Chain Saw.
  • Coordinate advanced specialized training such as: Confined Space, Fall Protection, and Electrical ARC Flash.
  • Perform risk management analysis regarding employee safety, workers compensation, public liability, and self-insurance programs.   
  • Develop and provide training programs that enhance employee safety.
  • Participate actively in: State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), State-wide Safety Committee, Accident Review Team, Hunter Accident Review Board, National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and Missouri Workers' Compensation Safety Program.
  • Actively participate in safety research in an effort to make the Safety First culture more effective.
  • Supervise up to two (2) safety admininstrative assistants to support departmental safety functions.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety Management or related field.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in safety program management.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST) is preferred.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to identify hazards and develop a plan to resolve.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Department staff and the public.
  • Ability to efficiently produce frequent, well-written documents, articles and correspondence.
  • Ability to frequently make professional presentations to large groups.
  • Ability to travel frequently and stay overnight occasionally.
  • Ability to occasionally participate in weekend training exercises.

Work Environment

  • Work is typically performed in a standard office environment.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain in a stationary position 70% or more of the time.
  • Regularly drive long distances.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Regularly lift up to 35 pounds and carry across rough terrain.
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
