Summary/Objective

Act as a statewide spokesperson through various media.

Essential Job Duties

  • Assist the media during visits and answer questions via telephone, email, and in person discussion.
  • Prepare and disseminate communications plans.
  • Write and distribute news releases, social media posts, newsletters, etc.
  • Conduct media training for staff.
  • Provide counsel and recommendations regarding communications efforts and issues.

Ancillary Job Duties

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Natural Resources, or related.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience including newsroom experience and environmental reporting, public and/or natural resource management.
  • Must maintain a current, valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge to operate a video camera and do basic editing of audio and video.
  • Knowledge to use a microcomputer to create and edit documents and scripts, produce titles and edit graphics and communicate using on-line services such as Internet, Compuserve and electronic bulletin boards.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to actively participate in outdoor activities, and have a working knowledge of fishing and hunting.
  • Ability to learn and understand the basic public policy issues of fish, forest, and wildlife management.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with members of the news media, governmental and university officials, school teachers, administrators, civic and environmental leaders, Department personnel and the general public.
  • Ability to speak to large groups, and to appear on camera explaining conservation issues to a television audience.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in interpreting Department policies and procedures, delegating responsibilities and managing personal time.
  • Ability to frequently travel and stay overnight.
  • Ability to work varying hours and shifts, as needed.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain in a stationary position 70% of the time.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more.
  • Three-dimensional vision- ability to judge distance and space relationships.
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

This position has been determined to be Exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy. 

Salaried and hourly employees are expected to use a mobile device-cellular phone for Department business, as needed.
