Summary/Objective

Oversees implementation of planting, cultivation, growing, harvesting and distribution of tree and shrub seedlings to the public and for use on publicly owned Department and partner lands.

Essential Job Duties

  • Supervise salaried staff, reviews performance, prepares performance appraisals and recommends corrective action. Assists in the hiring and training of salaried and hourly staff.
  • Plan and organize work team activities including oversight of duties associated with the cleaning of seed, planting, cultivation, harvesting and distribution of seedling trees including processing, inventory, and load/unloading seedlings.
  • Oversee the installation of irrigation lines, the lifting and grading of seedlings, seedling storage, packaging and shipping of orders.
  • Assure the timely completion of administrative responsibilities like completion of time sheets, management of equipment rental contracts, monitoring maintenance contracts, bid management, activity reporting and invoice processing.
  • Assist with budget creation and expenditure.
  • Operate specialized equipment to plant, cultivate, harvest and distribute trees including using forklifts, tractors, pallet loaders, seed planters, etc.
  • Oversee the irrigation of planting beds and apply chemicals including pesticides, fungicides and herbicides as directed to achieve a high quality seedling.
  • Oversee maintenance on assigned work area, roads, public areas and equipment and cleanliness in public areas.  This includes, mowing, lawn maintenance, trash pickup, boundary marking, hazard tree mitigation, facility cleaning, trail maintenance and debris removal on assigned Conservation Area.
  • Implement quality control measures to ensure trees are the right caliper and they are the right size during grading.
  • Maintain seedling inventory to ensure orders are filled on schedule.
  • Maintain fire lines to protect nursery stock from wildland fire and promote public safety by cutting down dead trees, mowing and removing debris.
  • Educate the public on natural resource management objectives through hosting tours of the nursery and other special activities including Open House events.
  • Prepare and present productivity, inventory, and other reports.
  • Assist in wildfire suppression and prescribed burning.

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Organize and/or participate in special events and programs, as needed.
  • Perform administrative duties, such as taking phone calls to answer public questions concerning available nursery operations or stock.
  • Assists in forest management activities on nursery property such as tree thinning, timber sales, tree planting and removal.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience in forestry or nursery work.
  • Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License.
  • Must maintain a valid, current Class A Driver’s License and Class B CDL with air brakes.
  • Must be able to obtain a passenger bus endorsement on CDL license

  • Ability to operate tools and equipment for land management.
  • Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to supervise suppression of major wildfires.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of job situations often involving long hours, hazardous conditions and difficult circumstances.

  • Ability to accept change and new information and cope with job pressure and stress.
  • Familiarity with nursery equipment.

  • Ability to work weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Basic plant and seed identification knowledge.

Work Environment

  • Frequently work in outdoor weather.
  • Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.

Physical Abilities

  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more, and three-dimensional vision.
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Regularly lift up to 40 pounds; correctly lift up to 60 pounds.
