Summary/Objective

Assist with the collection, analysis, and reporting of biological and physical data.

Essential Job Duties

  • Assist on research, monitoring or survey projects on animal and plant populations and their habitats by sampling species, collecting information, processing samples, entering data in spreadsheets, or other data management devices.
  • Maintain the accuracy of and availability to information in various databases. 
  • Provide limited scientific technical support to researchers, students, managers, administrators, educators, and protection staff.
  • Perform general maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Correspond with stakeholders via email, telephone, and in-person discussion.
  • Most positions are field work focused, although a few may be lab focused.

Education and Experience

  • Two years of undergraduate education in one of the sciences (e.g., Wildlife, Fisheries, Forestry, or Biological Sciences).
  • Must maintain a current, valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Be able to operate 4WD vehicles.
  • Be willing to work irregular hours (early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays) as needed to complete project objectives.
  • Have strong intrapersonal skills.
  • Must be able to coordinate field work activities with other RSAs and MDC staff.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with private landowners as capturing turkeys on private lands will be a large portion of this effort.
  • Be able to work with minimal supervision and be self-directed.
  • Be a diligent record keeper.
  • Possess strong Problem- solving skills.

Work Environment

  • Be able to lift 50 lbs. & perform strenuous work under adverse conditions (ice, snow, rain, mud, freezing temperatures).
  • Expect to sit long hours in a blind in all conditions for turkeys to come to bait.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain stationary up to 70% of the time.
  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Regularly operate tools and other machinery and relocate machinery to other areas.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Regularly lift up to 30 pounds, correctly lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Exemption Status/Special Notes

This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.  Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy. 

Salaried and hourly employees are expected to use a mobile device-cellular phone for Department business, as needed.
