Summary/Objective
The Assistant Natural History Biologist will have the opportunity to work in both the Natural History Program and the Urban Wildlife Program by assisting the Natural History Biologist and the Urban Wildlife Biologist with projects across southwest Missouri.
Essential Job Duties
- Surveys and monitoring for plants and animals using a variety of methods.
- Location and evaluation of natural communities, including working with private landowners.
- Exotic and/or invasive species control using chemical and mechanical methods.
- Assisting with managed hunts in southwest Missouri.
- Assisting with the administration of the grant programs.
- Assisting with the development and writing wildlife management plans.
- Addressing wildlife questions from the public.
- Providing landowner assistance to deal with nuisance or injured wildlife.
- Participating in prescribed fire operations after obtaining the proper MDC certification.
- Work cooperatively with external and internal stakeholders.

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Wildlife, Forestry, Natural Resources, Biological Sciences, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.
- A minimum of two years of natural resources-related work experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to keep an accurate record of supplies, services, and time reports.
- Knowledge of ArcPro, Access, Excel, Power Point, and Microsoft Word.
- Ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle.
- Ability to use dichotomous keys and experience identifying midwestern flora and fauna.
- Ability to use maps and GPS to navigate to remote field locations
- Ability to safely operate typical vegetation management tools including power saws, brush cutters, and herbicide application equipment.
- Work varying shifts and/or hours, as needed.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in a standard office environment.
- Occasionally perform outdoors where hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions exist.
- Travel frequently and stay overnight occasionally.
- Work evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Physical Abilities
- Ability to move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
- Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
- Occasionally position self to access items on shelves, under desks or in high or low areas.
- Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
- Clarity of vision and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
- Ability to navigate in a variety of environments including woodlands, steep terrain, wetlands, caves, and uneven terrain
- Lifting over 50 lbs. regularly.

Exemption Status/Special Notes
This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
