Summary/Objective

Oversee all facets of a fish hatchery operation.

Essential Job Duties

  • Plan and manage fish production activities, including broodstock populations, spawning, egg hatching and rearing. 
  • Maintain rearing ponds, raceways, fiberglass tanks, and aluminum tanks.
  • Monitor equipment, including wells, variable frequency drives, heat pumps, paddlewheel aerators, high-volume low-pressure aeration blowers, lift pumps, and recirculating pumps. 
  • Create 24/7 schedules, performance reviews, disciplinary actions and review and submit time sheets and expense reimbursements for staff. Montauk Hatchery operates 24/7, 365 days a year.
  • Procure needed products and contracting services.
  • Submit invoicing payments and other budgeting maintenance.
  • Submit plans for capitol improvement projects and work with design and development staff to complete hatchery improvements and construction projects.
  • Oversee area, equipment and vehicle maintenance and construction.
  • Assist in creating learning and development opportunities for staff. 
  • Schedule education and outreach programs for hatchery tours, library programs, career days, school programs, fishing events, etc.
  • Develop and implement divisional training protocols.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries, Biological Sciences, or related field.
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional experience in fish culture with at least two (2) years in a supervisory role.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.
  • A valid, current Class A CDL highly desired but can be obtained after hiring.
  • Obtain a Pesticide Applicator's License within 1 year of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to coordinate administrative and management activities to achieve Branch and Department goals.
  • Ability to give overall guidance and direction to the hatchery staff to assure their work is properly carried out in achieving an efficient and productive operation.
  • Ability to make administrative and supervisory decisions in a wide range of management areas including budgeting, personnel and procurement matters.
  • Knowledge to plan and project future fish production needs.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and work effectively with others.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a teamwork attitude among the staff.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to be on-call and available after hours for emergencies.

Work Environment

  • Regularly exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.
  • Regularly work in all outdoor environments.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain stationary up to 70% of the time.
  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Regularly operate tools and other machinery and relocate machinery to other areas.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Regularly lift up to 75 pounds, correctly lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
